With the project “Image Wars. Power of Images” the Künstlerhaus, Halle für Kunst & Medien (KM– Graz) takes a look back at the moving image and investigates, with this exhibition of only video-artworks by international artists, different aspects of memory culture. The current power of images and policies, which operate on the social and aesthetic visual memory and contribute to the understanding of culture and current events, are at the heart of the show. At the same time, the institution presents the solo-exhibition “Cowgirls” by Austrian artist Gerlind Zeilner on the lower exhibition floor. She is interested in the ambivalences within painting as well as clichéd image ideas influenced by a male-dominated history of art. In her structurally significant and thus fragile, refracted virtuosity, Zeilner works on figuratively abstract pictorial spaces full of critical and colorful allusions regarding her existence as a female painter among male painters—and as woman among men. The exhibition tour offers an overview of the current exhibitions and invites you to take a critical look at the positions on display.
